    The various essays found in this book have been a great foundation to my own travels through Christianity and Buddhism. I have often contemplated and been inspired by many passages from the book. Of special significance, at least for myself, is "Wisdom in Emptiness", a dialogue between Merton and D T Suzuki based upon a study of the Desert Fathers/5(47). Thomas Merton's first book, The Seven Storey Mountain, describes his early doubts, his conversion to a Catholic faith of extreme certainty, and his decision to take life vows as a Trappist. Although his conversionary piety sometimes falls into sticky-sweet abstractions, Merton's autobiographical reflections are mostly wise, humble, and concrete.

    Thomas Merton was recognized as one of those rare Western minds that are entirely at home with the Zen experience.
